In a global first for Bupa, Cashmere View Village in Christchurch, New Zealand, has installed an advanced digital Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) from Vigil Monitoring. The system, which comprises a base station and pendant for each wearer, not only provides basic alarm monitoring but also delivers advanced "Family & Friends" capabilities for carers and loved ones.
Unlike traditional PERS, Vigil's Family & Friends can deliver targeted notifications and real time information about a person wearing the device and their environment to a nominated person or carer(s). By providing proactive notifications, the Vigil system provides peace of mind to the carer because they know they will be immediately notified if an adverse event occurs to the wearer.
For the wearer, Family & Friends also provides additional comfort and reassurance. The wearer knows they are in safe hands with the Vigil system, and at the same time it minimises any concerns they may have that their declining health is a burden on their loved ones.
Recent research by Nielsen has found that almost two thirds of PERS wearers are interested in systems that provide more than just basic alarm monitoring. The majority of wearers want a PERS that in the event of an incident will alert nominated family and friends, as well as a monitoring or emergency service.
Margaret Owens, Director of Independent Living at Bupa New Zealand, says the Vigil system is a perfect fit as it supports Bupa’s purpose of helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives.
"Bupa is investing in a Vigil PERS 2.0 system because it allows us to tailor services to suit individual needs, but at the same time gives us an easy, centralised approach to managing delivery of those services," says Margaret.
CEO of Vigil Monitoring, Alan Brannigan says “ Bupa is an important partner for Vigil, not only because of their strategic alignment with the way we develop independent living solutions, but also because of their progressive approach to trialing new value added services for their customers. We look forward to being a key partner of theirs through this transition “.
Bupa has joined forces with Vigil and Spark Ventures in 2014 to develop innovative solutions that will help address the growing challenges in health and care.
